If I was to ask you which season you like best, which would you pick? My in-laws lived down in southern Florida for a few years and my mother in-law always said one of the thing she missed most, was the changing of the seasons. She is especially fond of spring!
It seems like I have landed in many conversations lately, talking about different seasons of our life. This can relate to your age, the age of your kids, with your career and so on. What I have heard over and over lately is, people not understanding the season they are in right now.
This last week I had the opportunity to speak at a goals and dreams class. In preparing for the class I reflected over my journey in recent years. Looking back over the last ten years of my life, it has taken many twist and turns! I’m sure yours has too! Amazing highs and some painful lows. I’ve accomplished some of my hopes and dreams, but certainly not all of them. At times I felt like I wasn’t moving forward and at times even losing ground. I had more opportunities to travel, created some incredible memories with family and friends. Went back to school, of course my prayer is to never stop learning! Some close friendships that were gained and some that were lost. Sometimes clueless to why some people were brought into my life, to only turn on me and come so close to crushing my spirit. Injuries that were unexpected and unwanted! But! Overall when I look back over these last ten years, I am thankful that the list of blessings and things I am grateful for, far outweighed the trials and the sorrow.
The two images above are pictures taken from the same place, one in late spring and one in the middle of fall. In the winter it’s probably going to look even a little worse! Let’s face it, some seasons in life last a lot longer than others, for good or bad! We beat ourselves up or get frustrated with God during those seasons where things seem to go from bad to worse! We can’t see anything happening, we question everything and everyone! Am I on the right track? Why did I think God put this desire in my heart and put me on this path to only leave me in this wilderness?!
What we have to keep reminding ourselves is this is just a season! Something happens with certain plants like hostas, clematis or most trees in the late fall and winter, they will look like they are dead! The amazing thing is what’s truly going on in the fall and winter, when it appears nothing good is happening. In fact, it looks like it’s going from bad to worse! These plants and trees are actually continuing to mature and grow stronger. When they come back in the spring they are going to be even bigger and more beautiful!
When we stop looking at our lives under a magnifying glass and we zoom out a little. We can see God’s hand showing up time after time! We can see when we were clueless during those winter seasons, that God was orchestrating things around us, helping us mature, to be ready for what’s next. Preparing us for a bigger and more beautiful plan He has for us! Spring is coming!
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
What season are you in right now?
