Holidays… this is the time of year that some people LOVE and some people dread or dare I say hate! This particular year is a double whammy for some, with the holidays quickly approaching and a presidential election. “I am really going to miss all these negative ads that run every day, all day…” said NO one, ever!
In regards to the coming elections, hopefully we have educated ourselves on who we are voting for, PRAYING a lot and then make sure we take time to vote! The media is not the source I would recommend to learn about the different candidates… just saying.
I heard a local pastor recently say, “faith comes from hearing (Romans 10:17) as well as fear comes from hearing”. Watching too much news can certainly cause fear and discouragement. The pastor reminded us that if we want to live in faith, that comes from spending time in God’s Word. There we are also reminded we can worry or we can worship, but we really can’t do both. So, we can live in fear and worry about who is going to be the new president, governor and so on or we can have faith and worship God, knowing He is still in control no matter who is in office!
I have heard some people, who normally love the holidays, are already feeling stressed about the upcoming weeks. For some people, it’s because of some family dynamics, others have financial concerns, and for many I think they try to cram too much into such a short time period. Schools & churches have extra activities and local communities offer things that are only available around the Christmas season. Then the pressure of getting with all our precious friends and family, let alone shopping for many of them. Too often we set expectations that are just not realistic and then beat ourselves up and get discouraged for not meeting them.
I have a friend Jen Regan, that has created a virtual Goody Bag to help you have your best holiday season ever! It’s a great resource to help you think and plan out your next few weeks. It’s free, just go to jenregan.info and plug in your name and email for instant access!
If I can just encourage you, not to beat yourself up during this holiday season. Perfection can steal your time and joy! When you have a little down time, think about all you have done right or well over this last year, think of everything you and your family have, to be thankful for!
Philippians 4:5-7 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
In Philippians, it goes onto say, think (fill your minds) on things that are true, noble, pure, lovely, admirable and anything excellent or praiseworthy. Wow, do you think God really means, we are to guard what we watch, what we listen to and even guard our conversations? Yes! (If you get the opportunity read Philippians 4:4-9 in the message bible.) In verse 9 it wraps up with saying, put it into practice and the God of peace will be with you!
I pray for each of you reading this, that you will choose Faith over Fear, Worship over Worry and Peace over Stress! Blessing to you and your family as we dive into November!
