Recently I was on a bike ride on a local trail. It was early in the morning when everything seems new again. I was riding in a wooded area, where birds were chirping, a small frog jumped out onto the edge of the path and at one point a bright red Cardinal bird flew by in front of me and landed on a tree near the trail. I was thinking how everything about the morning seemed perfect. I felt just a gentle breeze as I cruised along the trail, enjoying all of nature’s offerings. There was a creek off to one side of me, but because of the summer growth now you really can’t see it most the time you are riding. There is one spot in the creek where there is a small waterfall, before the leaves fill in and blocked it, I would often slow down there and occasionally stop. This particular day since I couldn’t see it but I heard it, I decided to stop and peek through the trees for a look. I had only a brief moment to enjoy it before I was attacked! Mosquitoes and all kinds of other small flying things found me very appetizing! I couldn’t swat them fast enough! I immediately jump back on my bike and kept moving!
I was a little disappointed I was unable to linger there longer. I continued down the trail when I started to see the sun coming through where the tree line opened up, it was beautiful. The picture I took doesn’t do it justice but as I headed towards that opening, that bright light, it felt majestic. At the same time, I felt a since of calm and peace.
During a time of reflection, I thought back on that experience, I was reminded that God has each of us on a path. Yours is different than mine, not better or worse, just different. There are times when we want to stop moving, either because we are so comfortable where we are at or maybe we are just tired, but God nudges us, sometimes more gently then others, to encourage us to keep moving forward… or He sends a swarm of mosquitoes to make it clear! We don’t always understand especially when we are happy and content where we are.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
There has been so many times over these last couple of years, that the path I am on has taken me out of my comfort zone. We are reminded sometimes we have to “do it afraid”, to keep moving forward. We are to follow God’s leading with a childlike faith. As parents don’t we love when our children question everything we do or ask them to do?!
In 1 Peter chapter 1 in the message bible it says: You call out to God for help and he helps, he’s a good Father that way. But don’t forget, he’s also a responsible Father, and won’t let you get by with sloppy living. (ouch!) Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God.
I really do want to stay on the path God has for me. I realized later when I tried to stop at that waterfall, I couldn’t see the brilliant light yet, where the trail opened up… God is asking us to be obedient to Him even when we can see what’s around the corner.
Psalm chapter 25 starts out, In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. Then a few verses later it says, Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me…
Do you feel like you are on the right path? Are you struggling with moving forward?
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. So basically, radically Love God and love others and He will guide you in all you do!
